Dive into the dark abyss and see what lurks at the bottom of our oceans with our ‘Surviving the Deep’ program featured in our outreach this winter. Discover how the ocean’s most bizarre and beautiful creatures survive at 10,000 ft below sea level, perfectly adapted to the harsh, static conditions of the twilight zone. This program invites learners to explore the wonderfully weird strategies deep-sea animals use to make the cold, dark abyss livable. Diversity blooms in adverse conditions, where scarce opportunities for food draw eccentric and complex communities of animals from far and wide to partake in the feast. Discover bioluminescence as a survival strategy, where animals glow in the pitch black to lure prey, communicate, and camouflage. Perfect for ages 8 and up, our ‘Surviving the Deep’ program is an enchanting, fascinating experience that showcases the near-extraterrestrial life forms thriving just below the sunlight zone!

This program also includes our mobile touch tank, where guests can meet local cold-water creatures like crabs, urchins, and sea stars. It’s a hands-on way to connect with the chilly but vibrant world of the North Atlantic!

Calling all shark lovers! Learn about the diversity of our ocean’s most fearsome predators through our ‘Sensational Sharks’ program! Sharks are one of the most ancient animal lineages, and their survival throughout time is a testament to their skill and adaptability as apex predators. Uncover the expertise required to dominate the marine environment, and the super senses essential to hunting and finding even the best hidden prey. Not all sharks are made equal - from whale sharks to great whites, sharks can be found in every marine habitat on Earth and play a different, integral role in each biome. For those dazzled or daunted by these fearsome fish, ‘Sensational Sharks’ invites learners to appreciate and better understand the intelligent design and incredible variety throughout the kingdom of cartilaginous fish!

What lives just beneath the waves? In the intertidal zone, the slope between seaweeds and seafloor, inhabits a colourful, diverse world of rockpool residents! Animals that can handle the unpredictability of huge waves, ice, and long, drawn-out low tides have a special superpower that their fish counterparts lack - they can live out of the water! Our program, ‘Subtidal Societies’, invites learners to discover the flourishing world of coastal biomes, where sea stars rule the roost as voracious predators, and turning over a rock can lead to the discovery of rich and unique miniature communities. Through interactive and engaging activities, learners will connect their findings with our representative touch tank animals, gaining new appreciation and fondness for our tiny but mighty friends in the intertidal!
