Volunteer With The Mini Aquarium!

Are you chatty?  Knowledgeable about local marine life? Or would love to learn about local marine life and share that with the public? Love to read stories and always wanted to be a puppet master?

Volunteering with the aquarium was a wonderful experience for me. Not only did I learn a lot about myself and gain confidence in teaching and interacting with others, but I learned a lot about the beautiful species that call our oceans home! I would highly recommend this as an opportunity to develop important skills and learn a lot along the way.

– Kayleigh, 2015 Volunteer

I was a volunteer at Petty Harbour mini aquarium, and it was one of the most fun experiences of my life! Everybody there is so good at what they do, and I got to be around some of Newfoundland’s incredible marine life every time I went! The experience was altogether a very amazing and beautiful one.

– Claire

Volunteering at the Mini has been such a great experience. I’ve often witnessed the amazement on the face of someone who just learned an incredible fact about one of the many creatures, but I’ve also frequently been the one who was amazed. The Mini provides a positive and stimulating environment for guests, volunteers and employees alike and I look forward to being involved each summer.

– Volunteer since 2013

I have been interested in the ocean and biology since I was five, and volunteering at the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium has really opened up a whole new world for me. From crab to codfish, there is always something new to experience. It’s amazing to view ocean life up close!

Board of Directors

Kiley Best | Board Chair

Kiley Best is the Chair of the Board and has been involved with the mini since 2013 as a board member, and was drawn to the excitement of the project by founder Melanie Knight, friends since undergrad at MUN. She has been there since construction started and the water first started flowing. She is a fisheries technician at Marine Institute by day and loves the outreach and education aspect of her work and research, which translates to her love and passion for the mini aquarium. She can be found in, on, and around the sea… marathon swimming, conducting scientific research and educating.

Pam Burke | Vice Chair, Secretary

Pam is a GIS specialist and long-time member of the Mini family. With a background in marine biology and coastal management, she is no stranger to the ocean or the aquarium animals. Pam began as a volunteer interpreter when the Mini Aquarium opened it’s doors in 2013, transitioning to the role of Program Coordinator in 2015 and 2016. She joined the board in 2017, and heads up the Marketing and Tourism Committee.

Meredith Schofield | Vice Chair

Meredith a Marine Biologist with an M.Sc. and part of the family since 2013 has taken time between working at WorldFish Cambodia, the Ocean Sciences Centre, and DFO to run the operations of the aquarium. She started with us in 2013, transitioned to curator and operations manager in 2015, co-executive director for 2017, and now sits on our board. She has a deep love for animals (aquatic and land-lovin’ alike), a knack for exhibit design and loves teaching others about all the weird and wonderful ocean life in our beautiful province. You are likely to find her and her big lovable Bernese Mountain Dog out assisting the scuba divers and setting up the newest exhibits.

Matthew Norman | Treasurer

Matt is a Chartered Professional Accountant and an incredible asset to the Board of Directors. He jumped at the opportunity to become involved with the Mini as he is passionate about the ocean and all of its inhabitants (even though some of the ocean creatures are kind of scary!). The ocean is such a huge part of our culture in NL and it’s important to be involved as much as we can.  Matt loves the outdoors, running and yoga. He heads up the Financial Committee.

Brittany Conradi | Director

Brittany is a PhD student in marine biology at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Being new to the province, Brittany jumped at the opportunity to get involved in the community and share her love of the ocean through her position on the Board of Directors. Her first experience with marine research was through a public education program at Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre in British Columbia and she hopes to instill the same sense of wonder and passion in those that visit the Mini. When she’s not busy with her research, Brittany is likely to be found under the sea exploring Newfoundland’s rocky reefs, hiking the East Coast Trail, or planning her next travel adventure!

Keith Moore | Executive Director

Keith Moore is a science centre professional, teacher and lover of the natural world.  Sea Ravens and maintaining the aquarium’s systems are two of his favourite things, and he can often be found in coveralls behind the scenes.  Keith holds a B.Sc. in Biology and a B.Ed. in Intermediate/Secondary from Memorial University, and has previously worked with the Johnson GEO CENTRE, Manuels River, and Salmonier Nature Park in educational and managerial roles.

Keith joined the Mini Aquarium team in 2014 as the Executive Director, and manages all aspects of the daily operation of the facility while implementing the long-term vision of the organization.

Samantha Green | Education Manager

Growing up “around the bay” in a fishing and teacher family, Sam has always felt a connection to the sea. An ocean enthusiast since she started diving at 14, her path to studying marine science began as a WISE student in the Seal Husbandry and Research placement with the Ocean Sciences Center. She completed both her B.Sc. and M.Sc. through Memorial University, focusing on marine biology and Newfoundland inter-tidal ecology. She has worked in marine education for many years as a kayaking tour guide, a science interpreter at the Bonne Bay Marine Station, a teaching assistant for university marine biology courses, and with Sustainable Seas Trust, a non-profit ocean conservation organization based in South Africa. She is currently the Education Manager with the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium, a non-profit catch and release aquarium in Petty Harbour.
